Haha, I get this is a troll post, so this probably doesn’t matter, but I feel that’s all the more reason to say something about it since troll memes have decreased in quality ever since they were first started.

I mean, SOPA is for online piracy?? And there isn’t another United States of America?? And the USA is also referred to as a ‘her’ and not a ‘him’??

Plus I don’t think America is actually copyrighted to South America since there is also a North America and this is The United States of America.

Errr…That’s actually a picture of both North and South America. They just didn’t include America because it’s the point, Canada because it’s on top of America (and therefore difficult to fit in the picture) and the islands because they’re small (and therefore difficult to fit in the picture). Mexico, Cuba, and Central America are still part of North America.

Also, it was more about the copyright issue: the reason for SOPA. America took the name America from the continents. While it’s true that they added “United States of” (and that the ‘United States’ is possibly the most important part of the name) the country is commonly referred to as ‘America’, and its people ‘Americans’.

(Aside: I’ve always found it a little tragic that The Americas aren’t able to have the same continental identity as Asians or Europeans or Africans because of this. It’s the same problem non-Australian Oceanians had before they changed the name of that continent, really. But it’s a stupid sadness, and since the names aren’t identical likely very few people agree with me.)

While countries are supposed to have female pronouns to be grammatically correct, one might argue that the imposed gender is entirely arbitrary, and since the reasons for this decision are rather sexist, it should be okay to call a country by a male pronoun. 

(Very sorry to butt in like that, but I love a good random discussion. Especially in joke posts that I shouldn’t think about as hard as I do.)

But if what you say is correct (about the picture supposed to be representing all of N&S America, then technically all countries should be included, save for the USA since it’s obviously the butt of the joke here. Like, the US could’ve just been whited out or something. But I still think it’s only supposed to be South America since not even all of Mexico is showing, haha. OP of the post could’ve at least found a picture that included Mexico and Canada!

And obviously it was the copyright issue, internet specific or not, which is why this joke was made now because it’s not like the US is going to try to censor EVERYTHING, because that’d be fucking impossible, lol. So there’s no better time than to crack the joke now.

And I get what you mean about both N&S Americans not being able to call themselves Americans like Asians, etc can. I also just find it kind of funny that both N&S America are two different continents! Obviously when whoever decided to name the continents was naming N&S America they appreantly thought the two continents had enough in common to both be called “America”, so why not just have one America?

But I don’t really think it’s America’s fault for calling the country “The United States of America”, I just think it panned out stupidly. Like, all of a sudden people in the US just started calling each other Americans? I mean, there’s also Mexico = Mexicans, Canada = Canadians, Brazil = Brazilians, etc. who refer to themselves by their countries name, so I guess the US just didn’t want to feel left out?

And I can’t really say anything about why most countries are referred to as girls, but Germany is “the father country”, so he’s a man, haha!

Yeah, I agree that the picture would be more accurate with all the countries, but it would make it incredibly small and strange looking, so I can see why they didn’t. And really, it just looks strange because they left out(/left out part of) the biggest and smallest countries. In terms of the actual number of countries, most of North America is in the picture.

Actually, though most people consider North and South America different continents, some people do consider them one. I can only assume that these are not the same people as the ones that consider Europe and Asia to be the same continent (Eurasia), or they would have very few continents.

Oh! I never meant to imply that I blamed America! Really I think this is the only way the names could have worked out, considering the history. If anyone’s to blame it’s the Europeans for naming the continents in the first place. I just think it’s funny/sad the way it worked out.

Hilariously, I’m pretty sure that the feminine pronoun is actually grammatically correct even for Fatherlands. (Also slightly hilarious is the fact that, in my area of Canada at least, we mostly refer to America as masculine. I think it’s because all the political cartoons back from when America was invading portrayed ‘him’ as male, and we all see those images in history class as kids.)

I think all of this just represents the fact that history has a funny way of working itself out even if it doesn’t make that much sense in the present. Years from now people will be all like “WHAT? THE US TRIED TO CENSOR THE INTERNET!? WHO EVEN DOES THAT!?”
